It is important to remember to have oral health care support at all times of your life. From the time you’re young until the time you are laid to rest, you will need to continue caring for your teeth and gums. Although your teeth will wear down over time, thanks to proper cleaning techniques and lifestyle choices, they can remain strong until the end of your days. However, extra care will need to be given during cold and flu season.

When sickness strikes, individuals tend to neglect their oral responsibilities associated with their teeth and gums. Just because you’re sick does not mean you should stop brushing and flossing your teeth. You need to sure your mouth is clean and free of debris. This is especially true if you find yourself throwing up.

Constantly throwing up can move stomach acids into your mouth which are known risk factors for erosion and decay. Try chewing crunchy foods with a high water content to help stimulate the production of saliva to neutralize these harmful acids. Furthermore, studies have shown that by chewing sugarless gum for periods of 20 minutes or longer, you can effectively lower your risk for dental erosion as saliva will be produced.

Exercise caution with cough drops and throat lozenges. Even though they can be beneficial for recovery time in association with sore throats, it is important to always use sugar-free lozenges and avoid biting directly into them. Because your teeth may be in a weakened state, you can easily chip and crack your teeth if you try biting into cough drops.
